"The illustrations in picture books are the first paintings most children see, and because of that, they are incredibly important. What we see and share at that age stays with us for life."
Anthony Browne
Creativity is rarely a straight line. It's messy, playful, full of half-finished ideas and experiments that may never see the light of day. But those in-between moments are often where the magic lives—and today, I'm giving you a peek into that space.
I recently put together a short video (above) showcasing some of my random illustration work-in-progress on my tablet. These aren't polished or final—they're doodles, drafts, and sketches that capture the raw side of the creative process.
Whether it's exploring character expressions, playing with shapes, or experimenting with colours, each sketch is a step toward something bigger. Sometimes these fragments turn into finished illustrations; other times, they simply remind me why I fell in love with drawing in the first place.
Why share WIPs? For me, sharing work-in-progress isn't just about showing art—it's about showing growth. Creativity doesn't happen all at once; it unfolds in layers. By sharing these moments, I hope to connect with others who know the joy (and the struggle) of creating.
Alongside writing memoirs and picture books, I'm rediscovering my love for illustration—something that's been with me since childhood. The tablet has become my new sketchbook, and it gives me the freedom to explore without limits.
If you enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes glimpses like this, stick around! I'll be sharing more art, writing updates, and creative experiments as I go.
Follow me on my social profiles for snippets of my progress.
I'd love to know—do you keep your drafts and doodles, or are you someone who only keeps the finished work?
